2020’s outcome and 2021’s plan of Design Council Busan

  • DCB have achieved many accomplishments under COVID-19 crisis.
  • In 2021, DCB is planning to create a business base for convergence of design in response to the fourth industrial revolution.

In 2020, in line with the vision of the DCB's "Design Convergence Center to Asia" despite the unexpected disaster of COVID-19, efforts through various projects aimed at creating design-driven regional industrial growth engines, leading civic happy urban design, upgrading design job support systems, and building new management infrastructure have resulted in improving citizens' lives.

1. Design-driven regional industry growth engine creation

In 2020, DCB was selected as the Sports Industry Startup Support Center operator by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (National Sports Promotion Foundation). Over the next three years, the government plans to invest 1.4 billion won in state funds to support sports-related start-ups and early start-ups with less than three years to further boost the sports industry by adding designs to high-quality sports products.

It operates a Regional Start-up Leap Design Hub Center (start-up leap package) and selected 40 start-up leapfrog companies (less than three to seven years) to run specialized programs such as support for design improvement.

ITo Local design companies suffering from COVID-19, Live Commerce, which emerged as a new distribution market in the Untact era, helped local small business owners adapt to the rapidly changing Untact distribution paradigm and open up a market for trends.

2. DCB led Citizen Happiness City Design project

The Busan Metropolitan Government was selected as the city responsible for the Korea Tourism Organization's "project to establish an easy-to-read tourist information system." Busan Design Promotion Agency, as an executing organization, organized 'Developing and designing a project to build an easy-to-read tourist information system,' developed six new types of information signs. ▲ City-level wide-area guidance (A), ▲ Regional comprehensive guidance (B) ▲ Detailed area guidance (C) ▲ Destination guidance (D1) ▲ Destination arrival (E) ▲ Destination guidance-floor type (D2)

DCB, which was in charge of design and design of the guide signs, has carried out the Busan-style Tour Guide Sign Standardization Project in recognition of its public nature and expertise in various general design projects (Busan Ansim Village, Haeundae Hot Spring Road, and Cheongsapo Fishing Village Emotional Bus Station).

The Busan International Design Awards (Ibda), Asia's largest design contest with a total prize of 50 million 4 hundred thousand KRW, increased its international status by promoting the competition in collaboration with global design organizations such as the International Design Association (ico-D) and the World Design Organization (WDO). And 1,245 works from 17 countries were participated.

3. Advancement of Design related Job Support System

DCB achieved the best rating among investment and contribution institutions in the "Busan City Job Integration Evaluation" for the second consecutive year following 2018. This evaluation, which deals with job creation performance among invested and funded institutions in Busan, evaluates private-sector job creation through projects, financial support, and social job creation.

In 2020, about 508 people in 24 courses were trained through the design professional training course to improve prospective and incumbent employees' jobs and about 86% of those who were scheduled to hire succeeded in finding employment.

And DCB tried to support local talents through start-up support projects such as Busan Fashion Creation Studio, Social Entrepreneurship Promotion Project, and B-Social JOB Dream Project.

4. Implementing a new business infrastructure

DCB, which is expanding domestic and global businesses, established a fair and efficient new management infrastructure to respond quickly and accurately to rapidly changing internal and external management environments.

To create a collaborative organizational culture and mutual respect among generations, a "junior board" consisting of young employees under the age of 34 is being formed to establish communication channels between generations, establish fixed-term employee remuneration standards, and establish a performance-oriented organizational culture.

5. Plans for 2021

In 2021, DCB plans to focus on creating a business base for convergence of design in response to the fourth industrial revolution.

While the real content market has emerged due to the commercialization of 5G, online content consumption is accelerating since the consumption behavior has changed non-face-to-face due to the COVID-19 crisis. However, the 4th Industrial Revolution Response Design Convergence Business Foundation Project has difficulties because small businesses are unwilling to take advantage of this trend.

Therefore, in 2021, the company plans to develop and utilize designs based on a non-face-to-face basis through the establishment of a non-face-to-face design business platform, conduct support projects such as entering live e-commerce and online stores and establish a process to operate joint classes for elementary, middle, high, and general people.

Dr. Kang, Kyung-tae, president of Design Council Busan, said, “This year was a tough time for all small businesses and self-employed people with Corona 19. With the efforts of all small and medium-sized enterprises, small business owners, and Design Council Busan, all employees will make efforts with one mind to help Busan's economy take another leap forward in 2021.”
